Physical Therapy Q & A

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a specialized field of healthcare that uses exercise, manual manipulation, and therapeutic modalities to promote health and prevent illness by restoring lost motor skills and normalizing body functions.

Physical therapy addresses not only musculoskeletal problems, but many other aspects of human health. People often think that physical therapy refers to recovering from a specific injury. At Bayshore Medical Group, we take a much broader view of rehabilitation which includes:

  • Allowing the injury to heal naturally.

  • Strengthening your body to prevent re-injury.

  • Addressing the structural weaknesses that caused the injury.

  • Keeping your body’s support systems aligned.

In this approach to rehabilitation, your body’s powerful healing resources are optimized and concentrated on the injury, allowing you to recover properly. In addition, it will allow you to return to living an active life without undue discomfort or risk of further injury.

Our holistic approach takes into account your body’s complex system of moving parts, all of which need to work in harmony. Our physical therapy providers understand how your mind, body, and environment influence your overall wellness; we take a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients holistically.

What treatments are used for physical therapy?

At Bayshore Medical Group, our rehabilitation program aims to achieve two things:

To alleviate any pain you may be feeling, and to help you regain full function. This is accomplished by ensuring your spine is aligned correctly and improving muscle strength, mobility, flexibility, coordination, and balance.

Spinal adjustments play a critical role in injuries – no matter where in the body they’re located. These adjustments allow your body to signal the brain to send in healing resources without disruptions caused by blockages along your body’s main nerve conduit.

Once your spine has been adjusted, other methods of rehabilitation are employed to ensure your body is prepared to move again. Combining these approaches allows us to treat many types of injuries. Our dedicated team offers the following services and treatment methods:

  • Active Release Techniques (ART)

  • Therapeutic Exercise

  • Electrical Muscle Stimulation

  • Nerve/Spine Decompression

  • Stretching

  • Corrective Exercises

  • Traction

The team at Bayshore Medical Group doesn’t mask your symptoms – we address them head-on so you can recover faster. We want to get you back to doing what you love!

When to See a Physical Therapist

If you have sustained an injury, whether it be from an accident or strenuous activity, seeing a doctor right away after the incident is important.

Your doctor will tell you when to have a physical therapy evaluation. It is important to report any new pain or discomfort, especially if there is swelling or bruising. You should also consult your physician if you have worsening or persistent pain.

Early detection and intervention give you the best chance of a full recovery from your injuries. If you live in the Annapolis area, contact Bayshore Medical Group today by calling 410-263-4171 to get more information about the physical therapy services available at our clinic. We can answer all of your questions about our services, from the initial evaluation to follow-up care. How Long Does Physical Therapy Take to Work?

Physical therapists recommend that patients who experience chronic pain refrain from using their affected extremities until after treatment is complete. While this guideline works well for acute injuries, it doesn’t always apply to injuries that can cause ongoing pain and disability.

Some people experience relief within minutes of beginning treatment. Others require more intensive care over several weeks. Recovery depends on how much damage was done to your body during your injury and how quickly you start rehabilitating your affected joints and muscles.

The healing rates of different types of tissues vary greatly. For example, ligaments and cartilage need 10 to 12 weeks before full strength returns; bone needs about 8 weeks; tendons can take up to 6 weeks; muscles usually regain 80% of their original strength after 3 weeks, and connective tissue can take much longer.
